Tuesday February 13th: We have no bread

“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”

Mark 8:14-21

Just like the disciples, in today’s Gospel narrative, we too can be prone to misunderstanding the spiritual truths that Jesus teaches us. The preoccupation with the things of this world may cloud our vision, leading us away from the richness of Jesus’ language.
It’s essential for us to cultivate a discerning heart, one that seeks to look beyond the material world, for Jesus said, ‘Man does not live by bread alone…’.
The leaven of the Pharisees represents the danger of outwardly appearing righteous while harboring impure motives within. On the other hand, the leaven of Herod symbolizes the lure of worldly pursuits and the seduction of power and pleasure that can distract us from our true purpose.
Jesus continues to speak to us today, of spiritual things, in the everyday occurrences of our lives, if we only have eyes to see. Let us open our eyes and see the deeper meanings of the sunrise and sunset, the smile and tender hands of an infant, and the loving embrace of a mother with her baby at her breast.
