‘…but the things that come out are what defile.”’
Mark 7:14-23
Whether we recognise it or not we are often tempted to see the source of our sin as something outside of us instead of something within us; this is just being human.
We desire and we do not have so we sin to obtain. It is not only that we fail to identify the true source of our sin, but we are also prone to turning to the wrong methods of dealing with our sin. Our nature takes us to a space of defence and justification.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asserts that the source of our sin is the corruption of our hearts. Good manners and proper behaviour may vary from group to group. However, the underlying goodness or badness impedes all social divisions. That is what we look to.
Let us acknowledge that we are surrounded by so much that is good and for that we should give thanks; good things can sometimes distract us from the source of all goodness.
