“Relationship is defined by more than blood.”
Mark 3:31-35
When you are from the Caribbean, it goes without saying that you have extended ‘family’ everywhere. Your good, good friends are your ‘brother from another mother’ or ‘sister from another mister.’ Everyone older than you or in an informal position of authority is called Aunty or Uncle, from your next-door neighbour to your Confirmation catechist. It is, in this part of the world, a sign of respect and an indication of relationship.
Today Jesus tells us that a relationship with him is defined by more than a ‘blood’ connection. “Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.” Obedience to, and action in accordance with the will of the Father, these are the defining characteristics of those related to the Lord. So, as you make your way on this pilgrim journey on this earth, take a good look around at your fellow travellers. If you recognise among the many beautiful and broken souls those struggling to discern and do the will of God, know ‘dat is yuh family.’ Love them.
