Friday January 5th: Simplicity

God is not tied to the grandeur we imagine; He is free to be in the simple and obscure.

John 1: 43 – 51

Nathanael became skeptical when Philip said they had found the one Moses and the Prophets wrote about, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth. He said, “From Nazareth, can anything good come from that place?”

Nathanael’s reaction says two things. Firstly, it reflects the popular belief that Nazareth, being an obscure village, could not possibly produce someone as great as the Messiah. Secondly, it reflects the common human tendency to associate greatness with grandeur and overlook the simple, the humble and the unexpected.

Throughout His life and ministry, Jesus showed that God is at home in humility and simplicity. So why not Nazareth? Even today we find God in simple things: a wildflower, a sunset, a stranger, a child. God is not tied to the grandeur we imagine; He is free to be in the simple and obscure.

Jesus also showed that the divine reality is far from people’s expectations. Instead of mingling with the religious leadership of His time He sat with tax collectors, prostitutes, sinners and outcasts.
