A happy and healthy New Year! We are once again welcoming a new year of our lives. This year for the Green Thumb column, we will delve into many more wonderful gardening tips and tricks, planting guides, weather outlooks, expand on the Green Economy and explore the Blue Economy.
For many, me included, 2024 is the year where health and well-being will be top on the priority list.
What does it mean to prioritise your health? Prioritising your health starts with planning your exercise regimes, grocery shopping for fresh food, food preparation, consumption of clean nourishing food, and get adequate rest to name a few components.
Placing your health on your schedule along with those other obligations and ensuring you keep it as a promise to yourself that you will not break.
As you know by now, plants play a key role in our lives, not just for fibre but for the essential medicinal remedies, some of which are scientifically proven. Papaya is one of the most widely cultivated crops in the world. The papaya leaf has multiple functions and can be prepared into teas, extracts, tablets, and juices.
For 2024, ensure that you can access some fresh papaya leaves as they may treat symptoms related to dengue fever, promote balanced blood sugar, support digestive function by aiding in alleviating uncomfortable digestive symptoms such as gas, bloating, and heartburn.
Did you know that the extract of papaya has anti-inflammatory effects which can be used to remedy a broad range of internal and external inflammatory conditions, including skin rashes, muscle aches, and joint pain?
Rosemary is a useful source of iron, calcium, and vitamin B-6. The extract and tea are used to help alleviate muscle pain, improve memory, boost the immune and circulatory system, and promote hair growth.
Just inhaling the aroma of the plant is beneficial as according to research outlined in Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, the smell of rosemary can improve a person’s concentration, performance, speed, accuracy and even their mood.
There are many more plants that we will investigate in upcoming articles. I hope you invest in these two plants in your garden if you don’t already have them. I want to wish you a productive, safe, and healthy 2024!
