“Now, Master, you are letting your servant go in peace as you promised; for my eyes have seen the salvation” …
Luke 2: 22 – 35
Simeon is a prominent character in the Christmas narrative. Today we see him in the Temple just as Mary and Joseph brought in the child Jesus to present Him to the Lord. Simeon gave God thanks that the Lord kept him alive to see that moment.
Simeon’s encounter with the infant Jesus brings out the deep sense of hope, promise, and grace that the birth of Christ represents. It serves as a reminder that God’s promises are not empty. God is faithful. And those who are faithful and vigilant will witness His work in the world.
Note that Simeon was an old man when the baby Jesus was brought to the Temple. That means he waited all his life for that precise moment. At times we have to wait on the Lord. It may take a short while, a long while or a whole lifetime. Fulfilment may even come in old age.
The lesson is to keep vigilant and hopeful. God does not disappoint. He always fulfills promises.
