Keep nativity scenes until February 2 in celebration of crèche anniversary

Archbishop Jason Gordon is urging communities, families, and churches to extend the joy of Christmas by leaving the crèche up until Friday, February 2 (Feast of the Presentation of The Lord). This call comes as the world celebrates the 800th anniversary of the crèche, a tradition initiated by St Francis of Assisi that has endured through the ages.

Speaking at the end of Mass Thursday, December 21 at the Archbishop’s Chapel, the Archbishop acknowledged traditionally, January 6 is the day when many choose to take down their Christmas decorations, including the cherished Nativity scene.

However, he suggested a departure from this practice to honour both the 800th anniversary and the “wonderful event” of the birth of Christ.

“Come together before the crèche. Look at the humility of the Christ child in the manger and spend a little time of prayer there, a couple times between now and when you take it down,” the Archbishop implored.

The Archbishop’s call aligns with the Holy Father’s request for a special meditation on the Nativity scene in homes, families, and churches worldwide. It is seen as an opportunity for individuals to engage in prayerful reflection on the humility of the Christ child, fostering a deeper connection to the spiritual essence of the Christmas story.
