Wednesday December 13th: Christ, our burden bearer!

“Come to me, all you that labour and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11: 28-30‭‬‬‬‬

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus promises that his way is not a burden. Later in Matthew 23 1-12 he accuses the scribes and Pharisees of adding burdens on the backs of the people. They made it difficult for the people to believe themselves at peace with God.

Like then, much of our modern-day burdens are emotional, mental and psychological, stemming from a belief that we are not worthy. Jesus is saying that if we trust in him, if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we enter into a personal relationship with him and with The Father.

And as St Paul assures us in Philippians 4: 13 There is no need to be burdened because then ‘We can do all things in Christ, who strengthens us’!
