Live by faith, not by feedback

By Daniel Francis

In the last month of the year, we cannot help but think about what the new year will bring and how we will prepare to achieve our goals.

I typically spend November and December putting together a plan for all the major projects I have lined up for the new year.

While doing my typical end-of-year planning it occurred to me how much we have become a society that needs feedback. In a world where we are oftentimes guided by feedback from likes, comments, and shares we lose that aspect of faith that can guide us to success beyond our wildest dreams.

God said walk by faith but somewhere along the way, we began walking by feedback. We stopped relying primarily on our faith and began relying more on feedback.

Not to say feedback is not important, but God is number one so why would you want to place his guidance as a secondary factor? We have grown accustomed to validation. The likes or even the commendations get us hooked on external validation, but does that bring us to the right destination?

When was the last time you lifted a project to God in prayer and listened to what He wanted you to do? It is when God speaks, and we listen that the impossible happens.

That is when you don’t have a marketing team yet somehow your products or services are ‘blowing up’, that’s when that one coincidental conversation led you to the dream job you always wanted, or that’s when that one chance meeting aligned everything so perfectly for you and took you from 0 to 100 in almost the blink of an eye.

That is the power of God. That is when God’s blessing is applied to your ventures, but it can only happen when you listen and act based on His guidance, that is, you walk in faith.

The thing about feedback is that it can inform us, but it cannot give us identity. We are meant to live by faith not by feedback because when we live by feedback we are living by the standards of others as opposed to living by the standards set by God.

When you are guided by feedback your identity shifts from day to day but in faith, you will always be grounded. That is why it is so important to bring our goals to God in prayer. He wants to provide His blessing, but we are the ones blocking it looking for guidance elsewhere.

One of the most successful CEOs I know once told me that when he had to make a difficult business decision, he would get feedback from his team and put all the different paths down in front of him. But when it was time to decide moving forward, he would pose the question to God.

When he spoke to God, it was always clear which route he should go. He was so accustomed to and comfortable not only listening to God but acting on His instructions without hesitation that it now came naturally to him.

I marvelled at his ability because doubt is such a normal human experience instead of faith.

I think individuals in my generation, who are so conditioned to need some form of validation to guide their actions, do not see how deeply it affects their decision-making.

I sometimes find myself almost wanting someone to tell me that it is okay that I proceed with a particular action when I am uncertain of the outcome. I almost forget that I always have God. I can always turn to Him in these times of need to help guide me by faith.

This is your sign to ensure that your identity is built on a foundation of faith. Although we are informed by the feedback, we must be guided by our faith in all that we do.
