Monday December 4th: The faith of the centurion

“Go, and he goes.”

Matthew 8:5-11

Today’s Gospel reading is a very popular one, especially when looking at faith. However, for this reflection we will look at another theme: Understanding command, and concern for others.

Here is a centurion who is accustomed to giving orders, “Go, and he goes, to another, come and he comes”. Now he is meeting Jesus understanding the reversal of roles. His encounter with Jesus is not to plead for himself but for healing for his very sick servant. Because he understands how orders work, he uses his knowledge and experience in seeking Jesus’ help.

Two things stand out. Jesus meets us wherever we are on our journey; we just have to reach out to Him. Secondly, our encounter must not only be about ourselves but with care and concern for others.

Often, however, we get so caught up in our own world we neglect others. Let us today onwards, as we go through our daily routine, take a moment and reflect on the centurion and his encounter with Jesus, and what this means for us.

Jesus, our Lord heal us.
