Friday 1st December: A promise of stability and assurance

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away”.

Luke 21: 29 – 33

These words, spoken by Jesus, come at a time when the liturgical year comes to a close, when the readings usually speak of endings and change.

Change is the one constant in the universe. Everything changes. Even the foundational things in life change. Imagine Jesus saying that heaven and earth will pass away. Who would think that such a thing could be possible. And even if the earth should pass away, surely heaven ought to be the one constant. But even that will pass away.

The good news is, in a world and life of change, the one constant is Jesus’ words. The faith community has come to trust Jesus’ words in difficult times. Jesus provides stability and assurance for us. Hence the reason why we are always encouraged to stay close to Jesus. He is the unshakeable source of our hope and strength. Without Jesus we have nothing. With Jesus we have everything.
