Friday November 10th: Friendship with God

While wealth and possessions are important, they cannot compare with honesty and a sincere relationship with God.

Luke 16: 1 – 8

Jesus used an unethical situation to highlight the value of friendship. When the dishonest steward was discovered and was threatened with dismissal, he quickly set about making friends with his masters’ debtors in the hope that they would rescue him. The master praised the steward for his astuteness.

We are not encouraged to use dishonesty as a means to future security. But we are expected to learn that friendship is much more valuable than all the wealth in the world.

In our case Jesus encourages friendship with God. When our lives and future are threatened, we must turn to God for security. He is the only one who can take us in and so prevent us from wandering aimlessly through life. God must become the substance of our lives.

We must reflect on our priorities in life. While wealth and possessions are important, they cannot compare with honesty and a sincere relationship with God. God is our ultimate good and goal. We must recognise that losing God means losing life itself.
