Followers of Christ must always prioritize justice and compassion.
Luke 14: 1 – 6
The context of today’s passage is a Sabbath meal at a Pharisee’s house. Jesus and others were present and so was a man with dropsy. The occasion seemed normal, but the writer says, ‘they watched him closely’. It turned out that the man with the dropsy was planted to see if Jesus would heal him on the Sabbath, thereby breaking the Law. Jesus, aware of their plot, asked if it was against the Law to heal on the Sabbath. They did not reply but He healed the man.
The lesson is love and compassion take priority over rigid adherence to rules. After all love of neighbour is part of the greatest commandment. This means being kind, helpful and understanding to those in need, even if it is on the Sabbath.
Jesus’ action reminds us that we should not be afraid to stand up for justice and mercy even when it challenges the status quo. Followers of Christ must always prioritize justice and compassion. Doing good is right, especially on the Sabbath.
