Thursday October 19th: Denouncing evil

“Yes, I tell you, this generation will have to answer for it all.”

Luke 11:47-54

Practices that go counter to gospel values, and which do not advance the kingdom can be considered anathema. Jesus did not “put water in his mouth” to denounce them. In today’s Gospel he hoped that speaking out would bring perpetrators to a place of transformation.

A couple Sundays ago we were told that we have a responsibility to get those who err, back on track. (Ezekiel 33:8) However, so often today there is a deafening silence in the face of blatant ills that plague us, though we may bemoan them in private. In my own experience, it is common, when the little ones chose the wrong path, to hear grown adults say, “I ent have nothing to tell them youth-men, nah!”

Lord Jesus, does your admonition also apply to us today, when you say, “This generation will have to answer for it all.”? We thank God for parents, teachers, religious entities, community workers who make an intervention. May the rest of us, through the courage of our conviction, speak out and act accordingly. Amen.
