Friday October 6th: A Faith Response

“Anyone who listens to you listens to me; anyone who rejects you rejects me, and those who reject me reject the one who sent me.”

Luke 10: 13 – 16

Today’s gospel passage raises the question: How do we respond to the proclamation of the Good News? The proclamation of the Good News and the signs of the kingdom of God require a response. The response is usually faith, which begins with an act of repentance.

Jesus chided Chorazin and Bethsaida for not responding to all the signs and miracles they were privileged to witness. If the same had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago sitting in sackcloth and ashes. Sitting in sackcloth and ashes was the common sign of repentance. When Jonah preached, everyone, from the greatest to the least, sat in sackcloth and ashes to demonstrate their sincere repentance. (Jonah 3: 5-7).

We do not use sackcloth and ashes in our time. But we can give a response to the invitation by the Lord to turn from sin and embrace the kingdom of God through heartfelt prayers, sincere devotions, seeking forgiveness for wrongs done, making amends for our actions and works of charity.
