Meeting of CELAM

A meeting of Latin America and the Caribbean Episcopal Commissions for Family Ministry was held October 2-6 in Bogotá, Colombia hosted by The Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM).

Reports were presented from regions and there was discussion on the papal exhortation Amoris Laetitia, the Catechumenal Itineraries for Married Life and the Global Pact for Families.

Representing the Antilles region was Bishop Robert Llanos of the Diocese of St John’s-Basseterre, Chair of the Laity and Family Life Commission, Antilles Episcopal Conference and Raymond and Tricia Syms, the Episcopal Delegates for Family Life in the Archdiocese of Port of Spain. The Syms told the CELAM media ADN Celam in an interview, “We look forward to listening, learning and discerning with our counterparts in the Church in Latin America”. They mentioned issues facing families: crime, domestic violence, increase separation and divorce rates, single and absent parents, gender ideology, influence of social media, pornography and low-income households.

They said the Church of the Antilles continues to advance with its work with families and volunteers “through the grace of God”. – LPG
