Online parenting session

In  the 2009 movie, Mother and Child, Lucy (Kerry Washington) and her husband Joseph (David Ramsey) are interviewed to determine their suitability to adopt the child of a pregnant teenager, who interrogates them about what they believe.

Lucy indicates that she was raised Catholic, but the young expectant mother is insistent to know  “well, what do you believe”?

As Catholic parents, what do we believe, and how can we be intentional about passing on the faith to our children?

On August 14 and 21, the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission continued its monthly online parenting session as we accompany parents as they raise and educate their children. The topic was, ‘Being a Catholic parent, what’s the difference?’ using the book, Parenting Your Teens and Tweens with Grace by Dr Greg and Lisa Popcak.

Participants were invited to experience prayer as a daily conversation with God, opening one’s  hearts to God revealing hopes, dreams, fears, and desires as the more families  pray, the more God reveals Himself to them.

The two sessions had parents engaged through different forms of prayer, videos, discussion, and music and educated parents on effective ways to teach and exemplify the love of God and neighbour, growth in virtue; respect for all human life and God’s creation; the gift of human sexuality; the teachings of the Catholic Church; love for the Word of God; the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness.

Parents were encouraged to participate regularly in the celebration of the Mass as a family so as to experience Jesus up close and personal through the Eucharist.

Parents often say that their children are their own flesh and blood. A parallel was shown that through Communion we become God’s own flesh and blood and it is important to let children know that as much as they love them, God loves them more. Parents were also encouraged to avail themselves frequently of the sacraments and other liturgical services.
