Tuesday July 25th: Servant leadership

Saint James, Apostle

She said to him, ‘Promise that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.’

Matthew 20:20-28

Let’s face it! It’s natural for a loving mother to desire the best for her children even if it meant speaking on their behalf and going to the source…’bowing low’. This mother is no different. She seems to even dare Jesus to promise. A mother’s love would go beyond.
Are the sons willing to go the distance? To drink the cup…Quickly, the sons tell Jesus that they can, so he welcomes but cautions that only the Father has authority to grant seats.
We can be indignant too. “Who do these brothers think they are?” But aren’t there times when we too have wanted positions for ourselves or others, and gone past the regular channels?
We agree to ‘drink the cup’ but once we succeed, we spit it out finding all kinds of excuses not to serve. I like how Jesus lays out the facts. Read over Verses 25-28. Anyone who wants to be great must be your servant. The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.
