The Archdiocese of Port of Spain is bringing the life and energy of the 2023 World Youth Day (WYD) pilgrimage to youth of Trinidad and Tobago with a series of activities ahead of the international gathering in Lisbon, Portugal August 1–6.
Two major events are planned: a WYD Rally 8.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m. Saturday, July 15 at St Joseph’s Convent, Scarborough, Tobago and the Commissioning of the WYD pilgrims at the WYD Village Saturday, July 22 at Holy Faith Convent, Couva 8.30 a.m. – 5.30 p.m. Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon will celebrate Mass at 4 p.m.
The theme of both events is Rise Up. In Tobago, young people will lead in providing teaching and testimony on how to overcome adversity. In Trinidad, the school grounds will be transformed into a village in which youth, including migrants and youth in the care of the State can interact with various religious groups, non-governmental organisations, and government agencies. These organisations have pledged their time to help teens make choices that align with pro-social values.
Under the patronage of Archbishop Gordon, the youth empowerment weekends include Holy Mass, educational booths, panel discussions, dynamic speakers and testimonies, cultural performances, and merchandise.
WYD is an event which brings together young people from all over the world to celebrate their faith and to connect with each other. It was initiated by St Pope John Paul II in 1985 and is held every three years in a different city. WYD has a strong Catholic identity but it’s open to all.
The Archdiocese is sending 38 pilgrims and chaperones to Portugal. The contingent’s first stop is the city of Porto where they will undertake service projects and cultural exchanges. They will then head to Lisbon to experience seven days of teaching on the topics of social friendship, integral ecology, and mercy. The pilgrimage culminates in an all-night vigil and Mass led by Pope Francis who will commission an estimated 1.5 million pilgrims, encouraging them to go out and make a difference in the world.
