Ask, Believe and Act

By Daniel Francis

I do not know if anyone else’s mother does this, but my mother was and is notorious for praying for very specific things in a pinch. We would be driving into an outdoor shopping plaza and Mom would pray not just for a parking spot inside the plaza, but a spot right in front of the store that she wanted to go into. She would always be so casual when she got the perfect spot too, as though it was expected.

Growing up I thought it was weird that she would ask God for little things in this specific way but as an adult, I acknowledge how genius it was and continues to be. Imagine the specific big requests that she must pray for and 100 per cent believe that God will help her bring them to fruition.

I want to break down what my mother does so that you too can prosper from it. The first step is “The Ask.” For the bashful among us, this may be a difficult first step. It sounds so simple, but is it? You have to know exactly what you want and have the courage to ask for it.

Also, when it comes to our big goals sometimes the request is not always clear. A simple exercise I do with my clients when I am helping them become their best selves is by asking them a simple question but pressing them to be more specific with each answer.

So, the conversation usually goes something like this:

Me: What is the first word that comes to your mind when you think about success?

Client: Comfortable

Me: Great! What does “comfortable” in this case mean to you?

Client: Being able to take care of my family and myself.

Me: Ok and what do you have to do to be able to achieve this?

Client: Um…have enough money to handle everything?

Me: And how much money would that be?

Client: You know, I never thought about the exact amount…

Without fail, most of the conversations always follow on this track and what I have realised is that we all have these vague ideas of what we want, and we use these as our targets.

The problem is if your target is vague, your results will be haphazard. Case in point, aiming for the idea of “being comfortable” versus aiming to make X amount of money each month so you and your family can live comfortably.

All to say do some internal digging to find out exactly what it is that you want or need, big and small, and then ask God for it specifically.

The next step is “Belief.” The 100 per cent unshakeable belief or faith that what you are asking for will be granted. Just like my mother knew without a doubt she would get the exact spot she desired, we must also without a doubt believe that what we ask for we will receive.

Why would God grant our request if our resolve is not solid? It is a clear indicator that we are not ready to receive what we are asking for.

Show Him you are ready. Believe without an ounce of hesitation that you will get what you asked for and God will put things in place once it fits within His plan for you.

The final step is “Action.” God is funny in that He will put things in place for us to get what we ask for, but it is in His timing and not always as we expect. Not only that, but we must be prepared to work towards the results. He will not magically drop what we want in our laps.

I remember seeing a comic strip about a man praying to God for a bridge to cross a river. He waited and waited and waited. Frustrated he cried out to God asking why He had forsaken him. In the next panel, you see all the resources he needed to build the bridge were all around him.

Let us not be like the man in the comic strip missing the resources or opportunities that God presents us that lead us closer to what we want or need. So, the next time you are looking for a parking space I hope you remember to pray a specific prayer.
