A group of students from the St Mary’s Mucurapo Boys’ RC and St Mary’s Mucurapo Girls’ RC primary schools will be involved in a vacation camp July 10–21 at the Boys’ school, George Cabral Street, St James, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3.p.m.
The St Mary’s Mucurapo Angels Camp is hosted by United Way Trinidad and Tobago (UWTT) under the ‘Building Bridges from Learning to Success’ programme, Out of School Time Component. Steel pan instruments were procured in 2022/2023 under the Building Bridges programme.
Participants will be exposed to music – development of music literacy knowledge and practical skills which will help with teamwork, socialisation, and self-regulation skills.
A release from UWTT stated this “is especially important and helpful for students who have diverse learning styles”. The project also builds on the Ministry of Health’s ‘Get Moving Programme’ which targets adults.
“The vacation camps aim to promote movement and outdoor activities as a means of lowering risk against illnesses”, the release stated. The children, ages 5–8 in Infants I and II classes will have time for unstructured play which encourages creativity and imagination.
The project’s implementing partner, Music Literacy Trust, a non-profit organisation, is registered with UWTT. It was the implementing partner for the St Gregory’s Angels Steel Orchestra Camp in Fifth Company, Moruga in 2018 and 2019 under the Community Impact Project.
