“You will set the whole world on fire.”
Luke 1:57-66, 80
“What will this child turn out to be?” This was the question asked by everyone about the child born to Zechariah and Elizabeth. From the beginning, his purpose in life was clear. He would grow up to be John the Baptist, the man specially chosen by God to be the herald of the Saviour. “He came to bear witness to the light, to prepare an upright people for the Lord.”
Each one of us too has been created for a specific, God ordained purpose. Sometimes it takes us a lot longer to discover exactly what that purpose is, but there is no time limit or expiry date to discovering God’s call on our lives. But we do have to make an effort to discover that purpose, through prayer and discernment. No matter our station in life, – doctor, student, home maker, store clerk – we are all called to bear witness to the Light. As St. Catherine of Siena declared, “If you are what you should be, you will set the whole world on fire.”
