Theft at Mount St Benedict

Six thousand dollars in coins were stolen from two finance rooms of the Abbey Church of Mt St Benedict Wednesday, June 14.

Commenting on the incident, Abbot John Pereira OSB (Head of the abbey of monks at Mount St Benedict) told Catholic News on Thursday (June 15) “We have been under attack for a long time.”

He mentioned faithful may have observed that there are new donation boxes in the Abbey Church. Someone, he said, was stealing from the former boxes.

News reports said that around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Abbot Pereira discovered the front doors were damaged and the rooms ransacked.

Further checks revealed the coins, stored in two bottles, were missing.
