Unless we have a personal relationship with Him, we are left with just public opinions.
Mark 12: 35 – 37
Today’s passage discusses the Messiah’s identity. The scribes claimed that the Messiah is the son of David, implying that he would come from David’s line and set up a kingdom that would overthrow the Romans. Jesus refuted their claim that the Messiah is merely a human descendant of a past king or a political rival to the Romans.
It is important to get Jesus’ image and role right, if not, we will both misrepresent Him and have the wrong expectations of Him. Jesus is more than David’s descendent; He is Lord and Saviour.
Those scribes were repeating information handed down about the Messiah. The same can happen today. Disciples can simply repeat what is being said about Jesus. But no one will truly know Jesus through public opinion.
The way to understand Jesus is through a sincere relationship with Him. Sincere, close relationships reveal people to each other. The same applies to Jesus and us. Unless we have a personal relationship with Him, we are left with just public opinions.
