Friday May 26th: Second Chances

We all need to stand with dignity again after we have fallen.

John 21: 15 – 19

Jesus showed himself to his disciples and after they had eaten he asked Peter, three times, if he loved Him. Three times Peter said, ‘Yes’. Eating together is a symbol of communion. And after eating comes the mission. Isn’t that the way we celebrate our Church life? After every Mass, after sharing communion, we are sent out into the world on mission.

This was a significant moment to Peter who, previously, denied Jesus three times. Jesus assured him of forgiveness and grace. Here he is restored with his triple affirmation of love for Jesus and he is also given a new purpose.

Forgiveness and second chances are important. It was important for Jesus, not only to strengthen Peter’s leadership, but also to affirm him. We all need to rise above our negative past instead of being weighed down by it. We all need to stand with dignity again after we have fallen. All disciples can expect that Jesus will raise us up in the way he did for Peter.
