.”… anyone who kills you will think he is doing a holy service to God.”
John 15:26-16:4
Jesus knew his opposition against the religious authorities would not end well for him and so took great pains to prepare his friends for what was to come. He did not sugar-coat his words but stated openly that they were going to be persecuted even by the religious authorities who felt they were doing so for God.
That prediction is all too familiar when we recall slavery and indigenous genocide often sanctioned by “good” people. Today, we witness racial discrimination, injustice, migrant persecution, fatal false accusations, to name a few. Many of these heinous acts are perpetrated by religious people.
Amidst this darkness the good news is that God will never abandon us. The spirit of truth he promised will witness for us. However, there is a thin line between good and evil and we, followers of Jesus, must constantly evaluate our actions in case we “kill” others thinking we are doing “a holy service to God”.
Lord, have mercy on us. Amen.
