The Shalom Centre was established by the St Dominic’s Children’s Home (SDCH) on its Belmont campus in 2010, in response to the challenge directed by the government of the day at NGOs to set up ‘youth-friendly spaces’, to counteract the culture of violence which seemed to be gripping our nation’s youths.
“…. Sowing seeds of Good News (from brochure)” – not only in terms of spiritual exercises and social development, but also through technical/vocational development – the services delivered at the Centre have, over the years, outgrown its physical facilities and so, in 2022, the Home’s Board agreed to the renovation and upgrade of the Shalom Centre.
A little over seven months later, thanks to a number of benefactors and sponsors, April 27, 2023, marked the grand reopening of a new Shalom Centre.
An elated Sr Arlene Greenidge OP, the Home’s Manager, in addressing those gathered for the grand reopening, described the Centre as an “oasis of social and developmental activities … a place where our young people can relax and have clean fun, where they can find support and guidance.”
