“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life but must endure God’s wrath.”

John 3:31-36

The idea that God loved us enough to send Christ is the central theme of Christianity. However, John’s gospel presents a stark conflict between the forces of good and evil, between faith and sin, light and darkness, truth and lies. Is it that there are only two options available: those who turn to Christ in faith will have “eternal life” and find forgiveness for sin and those who do not, will face judgement? No one is neutral and no one is exempt.
God wants people to be saved not destroyed so he makes himself visible enough for people to seek him and hidden enough that those who want to make excuses can do so. Ultimately, those who die separated from God are those who want to be separated from him.
When Jesus says that whoever believes in the Son has life eternal, he means a faith which issues in good works.
Lord, you alone can satisfy the longing of my heart. Confirm my personal faith and commitment to you. May your example invite us to believe in you.
