This catch was the reminder that he called them from fishing for fish to fishing for souls.
John 21:1-14
It would seem as though the disciples had lost their initial zeal and enthusiasm when Jesus died. Today we find them going back fishing. People do that. When people suffer a great loss or trauma they revert to a past comfort or familiar thing. In the disciples’ case it was fishing. Jesus met Peter, Andrew, James and John fishing and he called them to follow him. Now that he has died, they had no one to follow so they went back fishing.
But today Jesus came back and met them fishing. They caught nothing until, from the shore, he guided them to a huge catch. This was not Jesus’ way of helping them perfect their work. It was his way of renewing the call he made when he first met them. The catch is the symbol. This catch was the reminder that he called them from fishing for fish to fishing for souls.
The disciples were not meant to go back but to go forward and carry out the mission of evangelization.
