“You search the scriptures because you think that in them you will find eternal life”
John 5: 31-47
Here, Jesus is in a discussion with the scribes and Pharisees who, despite the many miracles they have seen him perform, still refuse to accept him as the Messiah. He tells them, “You search the scriptures because you think that in them you will find eternal life”. Eternal life is a person, and his name is Jesus Christ.
Jesus did not accept human praise. He was interested in doing the will of the Father. As humans, we all like to be praised. However, we don’t live our Christian lives doing good just to be praised by others. We too could be quickly misunderstood and be ‘crucified’ just like Jesus was.
Our focus, like his, must be on doing the will of God, even at the expense of human disapproval. Unlike the Jews, let us search the scriptures not to find eternal life, but so that they can point us to Jesus Christ that we might live more faithfully for his glory. It is in him alone we have eternal life.
