Saturday March 18th: When People Annoy Us

Be Merciful to Me, Lord

Luke 18:9-14

If we contemplate truthfully, we will admit that there is a Pharisee in each of us. People will often annoy or irritate us. Have you ever found yourself complaining to God in prayer about people who get on your nerves? Perhaps we have every reason to complain about what we must put up with from others, but do we even know the ways that we irritate others?
St. Jose-Maria Escriva once said, “Don’t say that someone irritates you but rather, say that he or she sanctifies you.” If we allow the grace of God to do what it must in our souls, when people irritate us, we can objectively examine the situation and use it to grow in holiness. Very often, God uses the annoyance to reveal the dross in our own souls that need to be purified.
Lord, search me and know my heart. Reveal anything that is displeasing to you in me. Be merciful to me, Lord, and help me to be merciful to others.
