“Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law and Prophets. I have come … to complete them.”
Matthew 5:17-19
Here Jesus celebrates the greatness of the Law of Moses and the Prophets. Even if heaven and earth were to disappear, they would remain until their purpose was achieved.
This scenario is reminiscent of people like Nelson Mandela, former South African President, who was committed to getting rid of apartheid in his country. Despite many drawbacks, deception and even 27 years of imprisonment, he did not lose hope but kept his vision alive until apartheid was abolished.
Like Mandela, we too are called to stay committed to our values, our ideals, our noble causes. Even when they seem far removed from being fulfilled, we have the assurance that “not one dot, not one stroke will disappear” until such time that its purpose is achieved. We have Jesus’ word for it.
Lord, keep us committed to our dreams, our visions, our ideals and even though it may take a while for them to come to fruition we know they will not pass away. Amen.
