Monday March 13th: Trusting the message

“Upon hearing these things, (they) were filled with anger.”

Luke 4:24-30

This Gospel passage teaches us that it is difficult for us to let go of attachments, especially when they are part of our belief system. We make judgments about who is in and who is out, who is worthy and who is not.

It was difficult for the people of Nazareth to let go of the fact that they knew Jesus growing up as a simple carpenter’s son, to now accept him as the Messiah. They wanted signs and wonders from above.

As we journey through lent, let us examine what attachments we must let go of if we are to grow spiritually. At the heart of these are our attachments to who we believe we are. Do we perceive ourselves unworthy? Do we perceive ourselves as higher than others?

As we reflect on this passage, we should ask ourselves: Do we truly believe that Jesus’ message is good news for us? May this story inspire us to have the courage to follow Jesus, even when it’s difficult, and to trust in his message of love and liberation.
