Sincerity of our prayers matters
Matthew 6:7-15
Shouting and swearing erupted from the mixed group as we deliberated on the topic assigned. “Let us pray”, I impetuously suggested. The returned glares curtailed my speech, and it was a non-Christian who began the Lord’s Prayer!
She had been taught it as a child by her Roman Catholic neighbour as “Everybody’s Prayer”. Accustomed, from an infant to rattling the prayer, I was struck by the realization of “our” and “us”. “Our” includes every single person, without exceptions and “us” not just family and friends, but all mankind!
Taught by Jesus himself, the perfect template of prayer: God’s name to be honoured, His kingdom to come presently and at the end of time; conforming of our will to His; provision of our daily needs; forgiveness which is conditional, not optional; a way to escape temptation and strength to endure.
Sincerity of our prayers matters, not a barrage of flowery phrases or theological words. Guided by the ultimate prayer, our lives would be shaped more and more to reflect the love and life of Jesus and thus fulfilment of His ultimate promise.
