By giving up something important or valued, we demonstrate sorrow for sins and a desire to turn away from them
Matthew 9: 14 – 15
The Lenten season is here once again. Fasting is one of the disciplines of Lent. John’s disciples challenged Jesus that he and his disciples did not fast. But Jesus said the time will come when they will fast.
Our most basic appetite is for food. Every living thing awakens to eat. We may ask then, Why do we fast, since it goes against our most basic need? The simplest answer is, if we can control our most basic appetite, we can control any other appetite.
Fasting cultivates humility. It reminds us of our dependency upon yon God. It is associated with repentance. By giving up something important or valued, we demonstrate sorrow for sins and a desire to turn away from them. Fasting helps us cultivate spiritual discipline by training us to have self-control. It helps us to strengthen our resolve to follow the Lord. Fasting helps us deepen our relationship with God. Fasting can be a way of expressing solidarity with others who are fasting or who are in need.
