“Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
Mark 8:14-21
When added to flour and other ingredients, a little bit of yeast can yield twice as much bread. For any baker one of the worst nightmares is bad yeast. This simple ingredient works in the background and could make or break the end result.
I’m guessing this is what Jesus was warning the disciples against – the focus on the physical and material. We have seen “the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod”, when at work, manifest itself in the form of deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, materialism and conceit- all of which can infiltrate our lives and hinder how we “see”, “hear” and “understand” God. In many cases, we don’t see it coming but once it is operative, it changes the whole texture of our lives; the way we act and how we look at people…and if not nipped in the bud, it expands.
Lord Jesus, help me to keep focused on you, and not on the negative things working in the background. Allow the Holy Spirit to shine through me. Amen
