Saturday February 11th: Spiritual Nourishment

Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

“If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way – and some of them have come from a great distance.”

Mark 8: 1-10

The depth of Jesus’ mercy and compassion for us is unfathomable. Through His teaching and His actions, Jesus continually assures us that He loves and cares for us.
In Mark’s account of the ‘Feeding of Four Thousand’, the actual feeding of the people who ‘have come from a great distance’ is also symbolic of Jesus’ deep and caring love for all, because each one of us has come from a great spiritual distance and needs spiritual nourishment.
Jesus, in His immeasurable love for His followers, does not hesitate to act. He directs the crowd; they listen; and he breaks bread and feeds them satisfyingly.
In the same way, when we take time to listen to Jesus’ words, as well as internalise them, we find healing and consolation and, as we remain faithful and focused on Jesus, we ourselves become filled with satisfying spiritual food.
Jesus then “sends away’ the people and goes to another district to continue His teaching. We too, are ‘sent away’ with a mandate to go and continue teaching and helping each other.
