Be Humble. Persist.
Mark 7:24-30
This Gospel passage says Jesus ‘could not pass unrecognised’ – even by a pagan woman. His works, His person, His reputation spread far and wide, as in our day too. This woman, however, was determined and begged Him to free her daughter from the clutches of the devil. She persisted in asking Him for what she wanted. She was humble, because when questioned by Jesus, she told Him she was willing to take the ‘scraps’ from Him as she thought He was only healing and freeing the Children of Israel – not outsiders.
Jesus shows, however, that He came for the sick, the broken, the sinner, the outsider, those who feel they are not the ‘chosen ones’ in any context. Jesus tested her, interrogated her faith and kept her waiting. In the end, He showed mercy and love to the woman by granting her request and giving her happiness.
We too may feel on the outskirts, but be sure of this: Jesus loves you and has come to give you happiness. Have faith in Him. Be humble. Persist.
