Sunday January 29th: Be blessed!

When we raise our hands toward heaven, He reaches down and touches us.

Matthew 5: 1-12

One of Matthew’s most uplifting passages also invites us to lower our eyes to the ground and make this world a ‘blessed’ place. Today’s Gospel tells us how: be peacemakers, be gentle, accompany those who mourn; hunger and thirst for what is right, share mercy and understanding; keep our hearts pure and suffer patiently for what is good. That is our call. Today’s Gospel reminds us that we do not have to go to heaven to be ‘blessed’. We can begin right here where we are.

When we look up, God looks down. When we raise our hands toward heaven, He reaches down and touches us. When we turn away from life’s problems and difficulties, He sends us back with the tools to fix the world: gentleness and peace, understanding and mercy, patience and sacrifice; a pair of hands to embrace those who suffer and a heart to mourn with those who mourn. Only with these tools will we build a happy and blessed world
