Friday January 27th: Mustard seed beginnings

Our daily living is filled with small gestures which, over time, count for a lot.

Mark 4: 26 – 34

Jesus gives two parables about the kingdom of God using seeds as the image. The kingdom of God is like a seed which a person sows. It grows and produces but in an unknown way. The kingdom is also like a mustard seed which is sown and it becomes a huge tree providing a home and safety for birds.

The parables speak to the mystery of God’s kingdom. It begins in a small, hidden way. We tend to think of God in terms of greatness and grandeur and therefore, we believe whatever He does must speak loudly and publicly. The truth is, often times God’s presence or work among us begins small and goes unnoticed for a long time.

Do not underestimate the small things or the quiet things. A small gesture can make a lasting impression. Our daily living is filled with small gestures which, over time, count for a lot. What small gesture can we do to lift someone up? What small gesture have we received that we are grateful for?
