“…I am the witness that he is the Chosen One of God.” John 1:29-34
John 1:29-34
Isn’t it wonderful when someone can bear positive, truthful witness to who another person really is? Yet how rare these days. It has become the norm to expect John Public to believe a claim simply coming from “a source close to” the people involved. And we are never to know whether this ‘insider’ is a grandmother or a gardener, thereby allowing us to judge the credibility of the claims.
We know from Scripture that John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin. He was family, but he was more than that. He was the divinely appointed messenger, the one chosen to reveal the Lamb of God to Israel. His word could be trusted, for he who had been sent to baptise with water had seen and had heard the signs pointing to the one who would baptise with the Holy Spirit.
Through Scripture and the Church, we his disciples have it on good authority that Jesus is the Chosen One of God. May we live in such a way as to be considered reliable witnesses when we speak about Christ to others.
