What the mind perceives…

By Daniel Francis

You would be surprised how powerful the mind is. That’s why it is especially important to safeguard the thoughts that you let live in your mind.

I remember some time ago, my neighbour bought a brand-new car. This was his first vehicle purchase, and he was extremely excited about the milestone. As excited as he was to have a new vehicle he could not, for some reason, shake the fear of getting into an accident in his new car.

He could not let go of this fear of damaging his new car so much so that he would constantly think about it when he was driving. He would go as far as to picture the accident in his mind. Unfortunately, within the first three months of having his new car, he got in a small accident one evening.

Is it a coincidence that his thoughts became reality or is there something deeper happening here?

If you think the worst, then you will get the worst. There is a school of thought that people’s beliefs influence their actions. This is called a ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’.

My neighbour thought about getting into an accident so much so that he basically willed it to happen, and this is what we sometimes do. We concoct these terrible scenarios that we don’t want to happen, but we think about them so much that they are constantly at the forefront of our minds.

What we are inadvertently doing is pushing forward this reality by constantly thinking about it. It is like using the law of attraction to bring misfortune.

If you do not know what the law of attraction is, it is the belief that positive thoughts bring about positive outcomes and inversely, negative thoughts bring on negative outcomes.

It sounds very whimsical, but the mind works in very powerful ways. When you are constantly thinking about something you want or maybe do not want, even if you are not actively thinking about it, your brain is passively processing it. Your brain is putting together ways to make it a reality whether you realise it or not. That is why, for example, my neighbour might have willed the accident to happen because his brain was so focused and kept passively thinking about an accident that it eventually became a reality.

As we have made that first step into 2023, I would urge us all to be aware of the thoughts we let populate our minds. The thing that may be holding us back from achieving the success we want in this new year might be us.

Luckily, in the case of a self-fulfilling prophecy, you can steer your beliefs. Believe and trust that God has your future taken care of, believe that great things are coming your way, and focus on what they are.

Suppress the negative thoughts and keep moving forward and watch how 2023 becomes yours.
