‘This is my Son, the Beloved.’
Matthew 3:13-17
This gospel is a perfect example of humility. Here we have two people who show us how true humility is displayed. John knows that he possesses less spirituality than Jesus and acknowledges it saying, ‘It is I who need baptism from you.’ Although he has been baptising he knows who is the better one.
Jesus, on the other hand, does not boast about his baptism but tells John, ‘Leave it like this for the time being.’
God is so pleased with the humility of his Son that he sends down his Spirit like a dove and He himself utters praises saying, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved: my favour rests on him.’
God is very pleased when we demonstrate humility and He will say to us, ‘This is my child, the Beloved, my favour rests on her/him.
Lord, help us to be always humble.
