Friday December 16th: Unmasking

What mask or false self do we need to shed in order to live our true vocation?

John 5:33 -36

John the Baptist is one of the great Advent personalities. Today Jesus pays tribute to him. Essentially John was witness for Jesus, the true light. Everything he did and said pointed others to Jesus.

John’s greatness was seen in his humility and faithfulness. Though he enjoyed popularity and people were beginning to think he was the one they were waiting for, he was humble enough to point them towards Jesus. He was a mere herald. He remained faithful to the role of herald. Everything about his life suggested that he simply wanted to fulfil his vocation of herald as God wanted him to.

Perhaps one of the things the Advent season invites us to do is to go into our quiet place and truly look at ourselves. What mask or false self do we need to shed in order to live our true vocation?

We can take our cue from John the Baptist. Being true to oneself, as he was, is perhaps one of the greatest gospel messages we can preach.
