Wednesday November 2nd: Our final destination is eternal life

‘I will raise him up on the last day”

John 6: 37-40

Today the Church celebrates the feast of All Souls. This feast commemorates all the faithful departed. It is our belief that all baptized Christians who died with the guilt of lesser sins are in Purgatory. Hence the Church encourages that we pray that their stay will be shortened so that they can see the face of God and enjoy eternal life.

Today’s Gospel points out basically three things that give the assurance why this feast is important: Firstly, Jesus said that all the Father gave Him shall come to Him and they will be accepted. Secondly, it is the will of the Father that He shall lose nothing, but should raise it up again on the last day. And finally, anyone who believes in Him, may have life everlasting, and “I will raise him up on the last day.”

So let us make it a regular practice to pray for the repose of the departed; let us comfort the living and remind ourselves of our own mortality. Jesus, we trust in your word, Amen.
