Tuesday November 1st: Why Celebrate All Saints’ Day

Find inspiration in their stories.

Matthew 5: 1 – 12

It is a beautiful thing to go back to the beginning to truly understand why we do what we do. So, in the 7th century Emperor Phocas presented to the then Pope, the Roman Pantheon which was converted to a church and consecrated to “all saints” who had died from Roman persecution in the first 300 years AD, since there were too many to give each their own day.

Today, the feast has grown to not just remember those original saints, but all the saints now celebrated by the church.

Historically also referred to as All Hallows (meaning holy in old English) Day, through the melding of other cultures and influence of secular society, focus has shifted away from the saints.

So how should we be celebrating this auspicious day of the Church?

Read about the lives of past saints, meditate on our connectedness to them and find inspiration in their stories.
