Friday October 21st: Wisdom at work

“How is it you do not know how to interpret these times?”

Luke 12: 54 – 59

Profound wisdom often comes from simple teachings; for example, “always be respectful towards others.” A respectful person creates a healthy environment, builds trust, generates friendships and so on. In today’s gospel passage Jesus gives two simple bits of wisdom.

Firstly, he said learn to read the signs of the times. That is not difficult since people already do that. Jesus pointed out that they were able to make accurate predictions simply by reading the signs of the weather. The same can happen for kingdom life. If people are taking note of the signs Jesus is doing and listening to his teachings, they can tell that the kingdom of God is among them and therefore, can make themselves ready to welcome it into their lives.

Secondly, he said make prudent judgements in response to disputes and grievances. Trivial things can become important things easily and quickly. Therefore, his advice is to settle differences before they get out of hand. Nobody benefits from a prolonged fight. Differences settled quickly cause less pain.
