‘I have come to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were blazing already!’
Luke 12:49-53
Today’s Gospel may be confusing to many. How could the Lord talk about division among family members? Shouldn’t he want harmony?
Yes, it is harmony but Jesus is showing us that divisiveness is fruit of our sinfulness. Jesus is heading to Jerusalem to face his death to save us and still we have not started blazing with passion for God and his goodness.
Jesus is pointing out that judgement day is coming and we must ready our hearts by conversion. We need to be inclusive in thought, word and deed. We need to grow in love and in the likeness of Jesus. This can only be done when our hearts are set ablaze in an intimate relationship with Jesus.
Lord Jesus, our friend and brother, set our hearts ablaze with your love so that we can have the passion for people as you did. Amen
