‘Still happier those who hear the word of God and keep it’
Luke 11: 27-28
In this short gospel passage Jesus is able to give us the template for our salvation, by showing us our priorities. The woman in the crowd is focussing on temporal happiness, but Jesus retorts by correcting her and teaching her what we have to do to gain eternal happiness.
These may seem two conflicting statements but Jesus is showing us the difference between the way we humans think and the way God thinks.
We learn, therefore, that if we want to attain the kingdom of God we must not just listen to His word as given to us in the Scriptures but, more important, we must keep it.
Lord we pray for the fortitude to be able to keep your word: ‘Love one another; just as I have loved you, you must also love one another.’
