“Mercy is what pleases me, not sacrifice”
Matthew 9:9-13
Today’s Gospel challenges us as we look at Matthew, the tax collector, being called by Jesus to be a disciple and later he emerges a cherished Apostle and Evangelist. Wow! God’s mercy is indeed transformative.
As missionary disciples of Christ we are all called to imitate him as we draw others to him. People by nature are not bad but good because God’s very breath is sustaining us. However, in our hunger for completion we eat of all kinds of fruit and end up in places where we should not be.
When we show mercy, we begin to believe in our goodness which is the first step of believing in God. This can transform us from being a ‘tax collector’ to a disciple and Apostle.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your mercy and love shown to us.. Help us in turn to practice mercy, especially when it is most difficult. Help us to love so much that mercy will flow. Amen
